Whenever the word "sublime" is popularly used, an art historical meaning follows close behind. Political theorist and British statesman Edmund Burke first coined the phrase "the sublime," which formed the basis for his belief that the life of feeling and spirit depended upon a harmony in the larger order of the universe. Burke’s insights launched the great romantic 19th century landscape tradition.
Foxhall’s exhibit features three artists who uncover the beauty and power of nature from their own unique perspectives and painting styles. Each approaches his or her canvases with fresh and personal techniques. In departure from the 19th century, Foxhall’s artists do not try to tell a story or educate the viewer by the scene depicted, but rather present the beauty and power of nature as it is on its own, with its potential for awe and enjoyment.
