George Wingate's paintings are intimate and fluid with
measured color and painterly style whether in large or small format. The visual character of Wingate's paintings
compel a personal response. They read with a sense of mystery. Wingate explains, " I feel that painting is a
sleight of hand, a kind of magic. The magic is that a few pigments, browns, blues and blacks, become a recognizable
place. I like to show that it is a painting, yet it has a place in its own right." For Wingate, paint creates the image.
Wingate studied at the New School and the Art Students League, New York. His solo exhibitions have included the Joseph
Keiffer Gallery, New York; John Pence Gallery, San Francisco; the Katonah Museum, Katonah, NY, as well as numerous group
exhibitions nationally. Major reviews and articles have been published in the New York Times, the Boston Sunday Globe
and American Artist magazine. His work has been selected for several juried exhibitions at the Butler Art Institute,
Youngstown, Ohio.
